Yugo SKS Urban Legend or Real.
I have heard from several people tht the Yugo SKS shoot better with the bayonet extended I have not had a chance to lock mine down and shoot it off a bench yet both way it is a fairly accurate weapon to begin with. Anyone else heard this or know the facts about it?

Baloney. Plus, it would get you thrown off most ranges.
A lot of guys take the bayonet (and the grenade launcher & sight) off, as they add unnecessary weight.

Why do you say "baloney"??? On many firearms extending the bayo negatively affects long range accuracy... maybe this one is different?

it is most likely a pschyological effect if anything. You see the bayonet pointing and it seems to shoot straighter. I myself have a Yugo with bayonet and I notice nothing, of course I seldom shoot with the banoyet fixed.

IMHO- It might CHANGE your point of impact but I dont think it improves it whether folded or extended.
I also dont believe the old boys who carried these things in combat sighted them in & carried them around with the bayo extended.
I think they were extended when your ammo pouch was DRY (or nearly so)and they were in the process of kissing their buns goodbye.

There are no "facts", each rifle shoots differently and you have the answer in your possession. Take it to the range, if they don't flip out thinking your about to charge ... fire it and see.
However, I really don't think it makes any meaningful difference other than say what people may think about the shooter ...

With over 700 post on this site, I think you know better, or at least I hope you do[:D] 0 -
it is possible that this would change the balance making it easier to shoot accuratly. just a theory

I want to point out that the Russians (from whom the SKS came after all) used to carry all their rifles around with the bayonets constantly fixed. You can see this in old photos all the way back as far as you want to go.
I suspect it really won't make any difference at all. Rifles are individuals and some shoot better than others if you hang a weight off the end of the muzzle- but in this case, not enough to notice.
It's not worth worrying over in other words.

Couldn't it act something like the Browning B.O.S.S. , changing the harmonics of the barrel and possibly make it more accurate?
I think it could.

I agree with ya Druid... I have a 700 .300 Win mag and a 700 .50 muzzleloader and I can shoot that barrel-heavy muzzleloader MUCH better offhand than I can my .300. Now, from a bench and distances greater than 100 yards, it's a whole 'nother story.0 -
The Browning BOSS works because it is attached to the end of the barrel; once the bullet has exited the BOSS part of the barrel, it's path has been determined. In the case of an SKS, the extended bayonet is approximately 1/2" below the bore; it's presence is going to have as much effect on the bullet as whether or not the shooter is wearing a hat.
As for balance, you have to remember that the SKS bayonet is permanently attached to the rifle. "Extending" it just means that it is swiveled from under the barrel to a point in front of the barrel. The redistribution of its small mass will be the equivalent of adding a fraction of an ounce to the rifle, hardly measurable.

NOW we are getting somewhere !
Boxer or Brief ?
And for nmeyers. Baseball cap or pith helmet ?0 -
I think that you're thinking of the folding-bayonet Moisen-Nagents, which are sighted to have the bayonet extended during firing. 0
