Just what are the differences between the older model 77 and the mark II 77's.
A guy i know is no fan of Ruger hunting rifles and Ruger in particular and says that the triggers cant be easily adjusted.
Is this true??
And if so why??
Fwiw i work with a guy that has the older model 77 (bought in the early 70's)and loves his.

The trigger on the new mark II are not easy to adjust. Some gunsmith can maybe do it for you. The older ones I believe were adjustable. I may be wrong but I think the triggers are set at 4 pounds. I had one and I liked it very much. I never thought the trigger pull was bad and it shot and felt great.

TH,
I had a Mark II in .270 and loved it,EXCEPT for the 3-position safety.
I suppose it is a good idea for safety sake, but I could never get used to it.I kept having to look down and see where it was as opposed to a tang safety which is posisioned much more comfortably. As far as the trigger was concerned, the previos owner had already had it set very light,so it was never an issue.Any other differences will have to come from someone else.

IT'S WHAT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THEMSELVES THAT MAKES THEM AFRAID.0 -
The first generation 77's (tang safety) did not have an adjustable feature, but some of the newer MK2's have three adjustments. I had a Timney installed on my 77V and love it. IMHO the MK2 safety is awkward and noisy. 0 -
That tang safety on the original 77's was nice, I wish they would have never gotten rid of it. I personally think that the original 77's were nicer rifles, but the MK II is good to. I don't own an original, but do own a MK II. The trigger pull isn't a hair trigger, but its not heavy and is crisp. I think its like 4 or 4.5lbs. Feel like my glock trigger with shorter pull length. 0 -
I had better luck overall with the old tang safety guns as far as out of the box accuracy is concerned. The newer MkII can shoot well, but most have to be tinkered with alot(bedding, etc)to get them dialed in right in my experience.--- There is no adjustment on the MKII triggers. The last one I bought(a sporter weight 223) had a Lawyer pleasing 6.5 - 7lb trigger that broke like a piece of granite(I'm not kidding). All you can do is polish and file the sear and there is one spring that can be changed. If you go to light on the spring the overtravel is to much and if it does not return the trigger back to original place the safety will not clear and swing into position. Then you have no safety. They make some after market triggers that are adjustable.--- The aftermarket triggers for the sporter bbl models will not fit the factory varmit guns, as they are a little different(and better feeling) from the factory.--- Hope this helps, and good luck........[8D] 0 -
the older mark one rugers with the tang safety are more desireable then the newer 3 position safeties to most true blue ruger heads...the older version had an adjustable trigger and as stated by a previous responder , the newer ones require gunsmithing or replacement if you arent satisified with how they come from the factory...in my opion, the only reason you would want a newer version vs. the older rifle, is if you wanted a factory stainless or synthetic as those variations werent offered in that earlier style.. 0 -
If you are getting a good deal on the gun,..then spend the $55 for the timney replacement trigger and you are ahead of the game (even ahead of the old factory trigger).
My MK II shoots very well with handloads (<.5moa) The newer barrels have been hammer forged and the older barrel contractor was done away with due to their spotty work. I don't know any serial number ranges,..but I am sure ruger could point you to which ones were produced with the newer barrels.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
