Enfield Identification Markings?
I'm trying to identify my Enfield No.5 Jungle....
The only obvious markings I could fing on the rifle are
"M 4493"
Which is stamped on the lower-forestock, Magazine bottom, and on the action below the thumb-safe.
They do not appear to be nice strait factory stampings.
Can anyone tell me what the markings mean?
I have checked several different web sites?

We live in a world that has walls...
And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns.

looks like the ser. #, mine looks similar. it should have shmle #5 mk1 (or something close) on the left receiver wall above the stock line, these markings can be very faint or painted over. 0 -
War time production of "5's" was done by modifying other (previous) Mk's such as 3's and 4's ... some of the work was rushed. There were also a lot of Post-war chopping and fitting going on and some of those were very poorly marked. You may have one of those. I think there is an Lee-Enfield forum on www.gunboard.com
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
There IS an Enfield forum on milsurpshooters.net. Those guys can answer most of your questions. 0 -
Look on the left receiver wall, also, look on both sides of the socket that the butt stock fits into. Most Enfield's are marked on the butt stock socket. 0
