cheap mausers?
I've seen many cheap surplus rifles with the Mauser 98 actions. Are these worth buying for the action alone? The action would serve as a good foundation for a custom project wouldn't it? Or is there some fault with these that make them unsuitable?

Yes and no, the Mauser 98 is one of the best actions that can be built into a custom rifle. Then again the better the action the more valuble the custom rifle. Very few custom gunsmiths have the ability or the reputation to take a sows ear and make a voon-der-rifle out of it. In other words Mauser, DWM, FN and commercial action have a real after market lead over the turks, spanish and other cut rate surplus actions that may be available. Bruno's VZ-24 may the the exception, except that there are so many that they are what are being mostly used for the better quality low price synthetic customs. If you are interested in trying your hand at building your own then figure that the turkish M98s are the minimun action that should be used of those taht are on the market today. If you buy a standard action with a good/excellent bore on the barrel do not forget the great 8mm-06 wildcat as it may be the best use of that config as is without buying an all new barrel and such. Have fun..... 0 -
if you plan to rebarrel, the turks are usually large ring with the small ring threads.i would stay with the vz24 or czeck rifle. large ring -large thread 0
