Luger Crash Course
I want to get a P08 Luger. I don't know a whole lot about them, so I'd like to get some info before taking them plunge. Is there a site soewhere on the web that could help me out? I'd like a shhoter, but matching numbers would be a plus. Stuff like where are all the numbers you're supposed to match up? Are some brands (DWM, Mauser, etc.) better than others?

its a deep, intellectual topic. for more than the simple basic varients, makes, and an at a glance price guide, you will need to make some serious referance book prchases.
i think the best beginners guide is LUGER VARIATIONS by H E JONES VOL.1 first published in 1959. value is affected by an infinate number of factors. even for a simple, NRA VERY GOOD shooter thats mostly original, you will need to spend between $750-$1000 to get a good gun. best regards, mike.

Mauser or S42 marked lugers seem to have better finishes.
All parts including the magazines are marked with either the full s/n or the last few digits.
You have to take the gun completely apart to verify the numbers.
However, it's a good idea to see if the frame, side plate, toggle assy and receiver match.
Since you are a shooter take the upper off to examine the barrel from the rear. German wartime ammo was corrosive, so real good original barrels are hard to find at a reasonable cost.
Many lugers were arsenal rebuilt, refinished and renumbered either in Russia or East Germany after the war and are on the US market. These have been rebarrelled.0 -
If you just want a good, collectable shooter, it's hard to beat a stainless steel Mitchell Luger. 9mm and made just like an original, at about half the cost of an original.

If you're are looking for a collectable, all serial numbers must match. The serial number will generally be 4 digits with the last two repeated on various parts on the gun. The clip should also have the same number. If you're looking for a shooter don't worry about it.
