The Winchester model 70 is one of the legendary actions/rifles of firearms. After the Mauser 98 the pre 64 Win M70 is one of the most customized actions ever. As to what this particular 270 is or isn't will depend on when it was made. The major blip in the history of the M70 are the years of the post 64 push feed rifles and they aren't that shabby. There have been runs that were not worth squat, the Laredo series for instance, but those days should be all well past. What you don't say is how it is stocked. Is it in plastic, laminate or wood. Still no matter what Winchester has a resonable warantee so that even if you get one that just won't shoot, send it back and they should replace it. I had one of the Laredos and that is what they did for me. Still between the push feed and the control round feed systems I personally perfer the CRF over the PF. But in a 270 it should make any difference at all.

Are you talking about the Winchester 70 Super Shadow combo with the simmon's scope from walmart. I bought one in .270wsm. The only thing that I didn't like was the scope. The rifle is great, but the scope sucks. Its a lower quality as far as asthetics but is still same quality as far as workmanship and materials. Its actually decent to shoot, the stock has a thick recoil pad that works very well. I mounted a Tasco EXP scope I had on another rifle on my Winchester. Looks like some kind of futuristic rifle. Its more accurate that my Remington 710 .270 and my Ruger 77 MK II .308win. For a hunting rifle its sufficiently more accurate than needed, and the .270wsm cartridge is a very versitile cartridge especially if you handload. I would recommend the rifle. But just throw the scope away.

That sounds like the one, but I didn't look at it enough to see if it was .270 wsm or win. Might be worth a second look, if what you say is true. What did you find bad about the scope? If I end up springing for another, the deal isn't so sweet after all. Thanx, Earl

About a year ago my nephew bought a Winchester mdl 70 at Wal-Mart.The barrel was actually out of round.Had to send it back to be rebarreled. If Winchester lets something like that pass their inspection,i want no part of one at any price.
