Need Advice On Buying an 8MM Mauser
The Sportsman's Guide has a really low price on some Romanian 8MM 1970 ammo in a sealed metal can. It is being offered for as low as 5.9 cents a round (plus shipping). Problem is I don't have a firearm that shoots that caliber. But since I love bargains I would like to buy a firearm for that caliber. I am thinking of a military surplus rifle. Can anyone give me some advice on where to get a good deal on such a rifle and advice on what to look for or to avoid? And can the military surplus Mausers easily be scoped and scope mounted? I have had excellent luck recently getting into the military surplus rifle hobby in that I have a Yugo SKS for $89.95 (free shipping) and a Russian Mosin Nanget ($59.95 plus $13.00 shipping). I am thinnking I will need to pay more for a 8MM Mauser, but I am looking for a shooter, not a collector. Thanks for any help.

Patriot: I bought the SKs (shooter grade) from www.aimsurplus.com. It was a heck of a deal and I have about 4-5 friends that liked mine and the price so well they also bought one. Total cost to us was $105.00. $89.95 SKS price and $15.00 for the local FFL holder to receive the rifle and do the transfer. All our SKS's shoot great. And I bought a bunch of 7.62 wolf ammo from the Sportsman's guide for about 7.4 cents per round (plus shipping). Plus I got a bunch of stripper clips for about 30 cents each.

Have to agree with Patriot. If you don't care about proof marks and historical interest, the Yugoslavia M-48's are usually in very good cosmetic shape and have excellent bores. I got one at a show for $100 with brass and dies. Surplus 8MM is so abundant I've only made a few reloads.
Be sure and scrub the bore with hot, soapy water after shooting any surplus ammo unless you are 100% sure it's non-corrosive. After the little hot shower, run a patch or two until they come out dry and then clean and oil as usual.

to get a good mount the rifle will have to be drilled and tapped, the bolt will also need to be forged. notice i did not say bent. there is a difference. i do this type of work weekly. let me know if i can help 0 -
M 48
Hey Guys
On the subject of the M48 Yugo, what would be a good price? there is a gun shop in Fort Pierce that has several but they are asking $199. I think this is a bit much after listening to others, do you think the best buy would be a gun show? I know ammo is cheap so that's not the problem. I don't want to get ripped off by the dealer
Help

If the M48 has matching numbers on the bolt and receiver (elsewhere to I would hope) then $199 isn't out of line. When the bolt and the receiver match and the rest of the rifle is mint, as many of the M48 Yugos are, then you should have a superior shooter.
My only qualm about the M48 is the barrel. Is it a 2 or 4 land system in there. Some of the commie barrels looked great but.....0 -
FYI -- if you plan on restocking it, the m-48's have a little different spacing on the bottom receiver screws than the model 98's so the stocks won't interchange. There are starting to be more sporterized type stocks available for the m-48's.--- My advice is to hit some guns shows, etc. and look for a clean shooter with the bolt work and scope base work already done. By the time you have this done you will have more money in it than you intended to. --- Might even find a clean used older 308 winchester that you can shoot surplus military/nato ammo in.......... just a thought........[8D] 0 -
I got a Yugo M48 awhile back on C&R. $89.95 I believe it was. If you don't have a C&R you'll probably pay a bit more. I think $199 is quite high if you only want a shooter. My Yugo is a good shooter, the only thing is, if you do order it C&R, get the hand seleect option if you can. I didn't and mine had a broken extractor. Good luck.

If you have a Dunhams , check them out. They had a special on them for $89.00 a whilre back. Otherwise, as others have suggested check gun shows, local gun shops, beg, borrow or ??? a copy of Shotgun News or Gun List. Yugo's seem nice and clean. There are also Turkish and others. Of course, for about $100 or $150 more you can get into a Mitchell's Mauser which is bonafide Nazi German (recent E. German stockpiles from WW2) 0
