A friend of Mine from Banff, Alberta Canada, and He was telling Me that He put 4 slugs from His 444 into a Grizzly last year at under 75 yards...and it did'nt drop the Bear...The Killing Shot was at 50 Feet and with a 338 Winchester Model 70 carried By His Son.....Makes one wonder....wither its worth the Gamble...

I have hunted in Alaska several times and have been told by several hunters in the Eagle area along the Yukon river, that they had stopped grizzly bear at 100 yards or less with the Marlin 444. These hunters were useing 300 grain hard cast lead bullets in top power handloads. They claim that the hard cast lead will out penetrate jacketed bullets. I do know that some guides carry the Marlin Model 1895 in .45-70 as a back up gun for bear. They also use hard cast lead in top handloads.

I believe that it was designed for that type of game and useage in mind.

Excuse me deerhntr:im just an old white boy from wyoming that lives close to yellowstone national park and goes camping about 3mils from the border of the south entrance.A few years ago it was safe to take your family camping there and not have to worry about (griz) so you call them. Thanks to a few special interest groups from back east and all the animal huggers and the game and fish we now have to camp with the griz!I have a lot bigger guns in my safe but i need something i can use at night when one jumps on my tent. Most of us who live in wyoming don't go to yellowstone for canping we leave it to the tourist so they can see there griz. But any more there are more griz out of the park than in it :I DARE THEM TO THINK THEY COULD LEAVE THE PARK WITHOUT ASKING: And by the way what the H*** does go home and get your shine box suppose to mean????

A 12ga. shotgun with some 3" magnum slug rounds should deter any large critter that may pose a threat. I'd probably actually load buck, slug, buck, slug.... That ought to ruin any grizzlies day within range of being dangerous to you.
