I want to put a short barrel on my 870 but want to be able to slugs and shot. I dont know a lot about the barrels but understand I dont want a rifled one to shoot shot. I have seen some on auctions that say they have a smooth bore and a rifled choke. Is this right? Can I put the other chokes in it as well? What do you recommend. Used mainly for home defense and maybe an occasional bird if i carry it in addition to my rifle while hunting

I think your best bet would be to buy a 20 inch slug barrel with smooth bore/cylinder choke combo....this will run rifled slugs as well as shot....my buddies uncles uses this setup for rabbit hunting as well as slug deer....and if you can get one with interchangable chokes (dont know), yes, you can get a rifled choke which would allow sabot slugs to be shot accuratly...

    Reb,

make sure if you want rifle sights on that barrel you buy the "remington" factory barrel, do not buy the "mossberg" replacement barrel. The mossbergs rear sight collapses every time you shoot.
