Yes, a .44 mag can shoot the .44 special. The S&W 610 can shoot both 10mm and .40 S&W, there's some .45's that will shoot a couple as well. Most semi-autos don't accomodate this however.

For a hunting pistol I'd suggest either a S&W Model 29 6" .44mag or a Ruger Blackhawk in .44mag or .45colt or .357maximum, in the 7.5" barrel of course, for hunting. I know with the rugers you can get the "convertable" options with some of them like with the .45colt you can get cylinders that will hold .45acp's and the .357magnums that you can get a cylinder for to shoot 9mm.

If you want a lot of interchangability try one of the Dan Wesson SuperMag models in 445 SuperMag or 357 Maxi.

I was in your same predicament about 8 years ago. I purchased a used Blackhawk in .44Mag. I liked it just fine until I shot it with hunting loads. It shot 44 Special just fine, but the 44Mag was painful (wear muffs and plugs to save your ears). I sold it. Still intrigued with big bores, I shot a friend's Redhawk. World of difference! Still as loud, but the recoil was much milder. I have a Redhawk, Super Redhawk and a 629 now. The Redhawks are much more solid-looking and substantial. Many heavy-duty 44Mag loads have warnings to shoot only in Redhawks, leading me to believe that they can take the punishment better than most.

pdog, Go with a ruger super redhawk in 44 mag. They have a 6 and 9.25 inch barrel, The 9.25 is a really big gun and hard to hold unless you are a big guy. I sold my 9.25, guess i'm not tough enough. I will get the 6 soon.

I do believe that the .454 casul is interchangeable with the .45colt but certainly not the other way around.[:D]

500 S&W-Any Questions? Why would you ever want to use 44 special instead of 44 mag for hunting? Just my 2

Smaller game....I used to use .44spl for javelina. Did less damage to the meat, didn't overpenetrate, less recoil and easier on the ears.

I have a Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull

This is the big daddy of pistols!

    It will shoot 45-LC.

Does your range or club not allow magnum power rounds!?

In my opinion these type of guns are no fun unless your breaking your unsuspecting friends wrists with a 360 grain flat nose round!

Are you going to use it for a hunting back-up (I.E. Bear stopper),
    Or simply for whitetail?

    Either way a smoky 45-LC? That's Weak!

    Son...

And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns.

I actually just picked up a used Smith & Wesson Model 1076 10mm to take with me as a back up to my rifle when I go deer hunting here in MN. Got it for a little under $400 at a local gun show. 10mm is a legal round for deer here. Doubletap ammo has some nice 10mm rounds to use for hunting. No affiliation with Doubletap, just anxious to get my new/used 1076 on the range to see what it can do. [:D]
