This serial number would indicate it was built after USRAC took over Winchester manufacturing in 1981. Prior to that date, Winchester did not have a letter prefix on their serial numbers.

According to the blue book, the G series began in 1968 or 1969 and was used up until 1981 but the number I have is shorter than any of the ones listed

    mercerguide...

You are correct, Winchester began using ther "G" prefix on the Model 70 serial numbers begining in 1969 (I don't know where Kdub is getting his information, but it isn't correct).

The serialization of the post 1968 Model 70s is very confusing to say the least, and there is not anything yet written (at least that I am aware of) that explains it. I believe that if you contact Winchester directly, they can help you with your question.

That said, my theory is that when production of the Super Grade was resumed in 1990, each of the various caliber/cartridge chamberings was given its own serial number range, and that your rifle is the 17xxxth 300 Win Mag made since 1990. This is just my theory though.
