Here's a site that goes into some detail on your rifle.

The rifle you have, is the "Model 1916 Short Rifle" as made in the Spanish military armory in Oviedo

The bottom of the crest does not match the crests shown in the Blue Book for Spanish mausers. Was this rifle sent to other countries who inturn put their crest on it and if so which countries? Thanks for any more info and what is the rifle worth in good condition?

The crest shown in the B B is from the LA CORUNA arsenal, these rifles were manufactured much later then yours, ( 1940's ? ). When Franco was the dictator of Spain.

Going by what you have described, and only what you have described, rufe-snow is correct; you have a typical 1893 Mauser of Spanish manufacture. Fabrica De Armas Oviedo translates as Manufacturer of Arms of Oviedo (a city in Spain), and the crown indicates that the rifle belonged to the Spanish Monarchy which existed prior to the Spanish Civil War. 1926 is the date of manufacture. As the Monarchy was replaced by a Facist government following the civil war they may have attempted to remove the crown, much as was done to Mosin-Nagant M91s when the Soviets replaced the Tsar and removed his property markings from those rifles. The information you have provided does not indicate the rifle having been made for a country other than Spain.

Thanks for the info, it is worth the $65 that I gave for it if nothing else for the action! I probably will shoot it some but have never had a 7mm. I have several 8mm mausers. It is complete except for the cleaning rod and I probably have one if the same as the 8mm or if not I can pick one up somewhere. Again thanks.

Here is a second question about the below 7mm Mauser that you identified for me and then I will be quite, probably not![;)]
This mauser has a sort of S shaped rear sight ramp, is that common or has someone done that to it or put it on it. If a picture of it would help, I can take some in a bit and add them to this topic. Any ideas on the sight ramp? Like I said if it had been a 8mm, I have several but this is the first 7mm I have had. Again thanks for any info.

    Original question:
I have a 7mm Mauser with a 21 or 22 inch barrel. It has a small crown on it that has been partially buffed off and around/under the crown is this: FABKorRICADE ARMAS
    OVIEDO
    1926
The line beginning with FAB is up swept around the small crown and the OVIEDO as well as the 1926 is straight across below the upswept. The 1926 is below the OVIEDO. Any help in finding out what country this is from. It is in 7mm with full military stock and bayonet lug.
It also has a hinged floor plate on the trigger gaurd.

    Thanks for any info.

That "S" shaped rear sight ramp is a knock-off of what the Germans called the "Lange" sight, they had it, ( the Germans ) on most of their early Gewehr's. It was obsolete by the 1920's, pretty much replaced by the coventional "Tangent" rear sight.

It's a wonder that the Spanish were still using it a late as 1926 and on a short rifle, no less.

Thank you rufe-snow and Der Gebirgsjager for answering some questions. Like I said I gave $65 for it today and now I need a cleaning rod as well as a bayonet to make it complete. I checked all my Bayonets for the 8mms and they will not fit. Any ideas where I can buy a cleaning rod and a bayonet? Then it will go on the wall as an addition to the mauser section! Again thank you gentlemen.

If you do indeed have a M1916 Short Rifle you might check the crest against those issued to the Guardia Civil which is two crossed Roman/Fascist axes. 7x57mm Mauser is one of the first and one of the best early Mauser cartridges, and one of my personal favorites. There is no reason why your rifle, if in good condition, can't be fired; and ammunition is easy to find. Even though designated M1916 your rifle is a Model 1893 or 1895 action, the difference being slight--primarily the shape of the bottom of the bolt. If the bottom of the bolt's face is flat where it pushes the cartridge from the magazine it is an 1893, if it is round it is an 1895. You are looking for a bayonet to fit a rifle of that vintage; as you already discovered the M1898 bayonet is different. It shouldn't be too difficult to find one. You might try SAMCO, which company still offers the M1916 for sale (theirs are in 7.62 mm), 1-800-554-1618, also www.samcoglobal.com Even the later Spanish copy of the '98 made at La Coruna, Model 43, usually came with a semi-permanently attached adapter to allow use of the 1893's bayonet as standard.
