HELP!!! AR-10 barrel - loose?
I have had an ar-10a2 for over two years. Just noticed last night that the barrel seems to be loose. Holding the carry handle in one hand and the muzzle brake in other and twist, the barrel rotates 1-2 millimeters. It is very hard to see it moving but can easily be heard. Thought it might be front site, handguards or bolt lugs but this is not the case.
I assume the barrel nut needs to be tightened slightly. Does gas tube need to be removed to do this?
Also concerned with accuracy change. I have shot several groups under 1/2 inch @ 100 yards...don't want to lose that. Will tightening the barrel adversly affect accuracy?
Is it dangerous to shoot if left alone?
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes the gas tube will probably need removed to tighten the barrel nut fully. I would take it to a smith and have them check it out. The gun will likely need to have the headspace checked after the nut is tightened. I wouldn't use it until it is repaired, if you have a case rupture with a .308 the gun might not be the only thing that gets damaged.[B)]

Why did it come loose?
If it is only 2 years old, dosent Armalite warranty them for life?
Something has happened to this rifle that needs to be looked at by the manufacture.
I would email Armalite about the problem and seek repairs from them.
Im with kingjoey, dont fire it anymore till its fixed.

the barrel nut might not be the problem...i have seen the barrel itself come loose from the barrel extension ..the barrel extension is the part where the locking lugs on the bolt engage...yes ar type barrels are 2 piece...pull the bolt and look inside at the breech while you are twisting the barrel if the breech isnt moving then you better send it back to whomever made it 0 -
You can probably send just the upper back to Armalite. That will save you a lot of hassle and if I remember right, they do good with warranty. Call them first and tell them what's going on and they'll probably tell you what to do fromthere.

Thanks for the help. Local gunsmith tightened the barrel nut and problem solved. Said headspace was not a concern. 0
