To lower your point of aim, fold out the bayonet... I know it sounds funny, but that is how they are sighted. The tight bolt happens on one of mine, but only with steel cased ammo, especially some Hungarian that I have.

The soldiers were taught to aim at the belt buckel. I know it sounds crazy but most all milatery rifels are set to shoot high.

With the rear sight leaf down your rifle is set to hit point of aim at around 500 yards, this is normal for military bolt action rifles. Our own 1903 Springfield is battle sighted for 587 yards with the sight leaf folded down. The troops were taught to shoot at the middle of the body mass. This way no sight adjustment had to be made in order to hit the enemy somewhere in the body from point blank range to the point of impact.

Huh, never heard of that. Guess it does make sense, although its not very condusive to accurate shooting on tin cans and the like at about 50 or 100 yards [:o)]

As far as the action, im using steel case ammo and i suspected that might be it, ill be trying some other stuff in the future.

    Thanks guys!

Cwinn- look at the slide adjustment on the rear sight, the lowest setting is 100 yds so it will hit a little high at 50. Try it at 100yds and I bet your in the x-ring. For a little milsurp rifle, the Nagants are frighteningly accurate[:D]

Hello, the gun is actually sighted in at 200 meters, not yards. Try putting the rear sight at the 200 meter spot and shoot it again.

    cwinn,

As Supreme One mentioned, the rifles were made to zero at 200 meters. Although the slide rear sights does have a 100 meter tick, you will find that to be generally inaccurate. For the M44, you also want to put the bayonet out when you fire. This will help to improve your accuracy a bit. As for the front sight, I have picked up a number of the 91/30s, M38s and M44s that were rearsenalled and found the front sights were not set in with any great accuracy. Some were bent, some were high and some were low.

As a military rifle, you are not going to get benchrest-match accuracy out of these. They are great for a cheap deer rifle and for some 200+ meter plinking, but don't expect much and you will be happy. They are Russian engineered and Eastern European manufactured to begin with. As we all know, Russians and Slovic peoples of the past century from the USSR were never known for their fine craftsmanship. Rugged, sturdy and good enough seems to have been their mottos.

    I hope this helps.

I have several mosin rifles, several variations, love them and agree with KJ's opinion, and all the advice given. One thing, though, that I can not stress enough, especially with the occaisional stiff extraction, is that if you have not already get the headspacing checked.
