roll crimp vs taper crimp
I will be picking up a new springfield stainless 45 a911 this after noon. Which means that I will need to stock up on reloading supplies. Which do you all recommend, taper crimp dies or roll crimp. I have always used taper crimp on auto pistol in the past, and it works fine for my 9mm and 38 supers. But the 45 is a new load for me. Should I stay with the taper????

yes, stay with it and watch the OAL 0 -
A case gauge is a worthwhile investment, too.
When you set up your dies, test your first rounds by dropping them in the barrel (after you have removed it from the gun); the bottom of the case should be even with the end of the barrel hood.

Since .45ACP headspaces on case mouth, taper crimp only. 0 -
Thank you for the advice, I thought the taper was better on the auto loading gun.

Most straight wall semi-auto cartridges headspace on the case mouth, so case length is far more important than it is with a revolver cartridge . . . which is why a taper crimp is greatly to be preferred. Depending on the age and barrel of your .38 Super, it may headspace on the semi-rim (barely larger than the case wall, but there). Many replacement barrels and, I believe, newly-manufactured weapons, headspace on the case mouth, but the original .38 Super Colts used the semi-rim.

iconoclast, my 38 super was a first year production 1929. I do no t shoot to many rounds out of it any more, but I have never had any trouble with the taper crimp I reload. With the new 45, i have a learning curve.

muss, to clarify my previous answere in light of your reply, your .38 Super actually headspaces on the rim, but using taper-crimped ammo it will not be a problem, just unnecessary or possibly (I'm not fully conversant with the details) redundant - which aint' bad, either. Congratulations on having such a nice collectible; I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.
