Scope rings & mount ??
I have a new Remington model 7 with the iron sights.I want to mount a Nikon 3x9x40mm scope on it.The eye relief on the scope is 3.6 inches. The scope is 12.3 inches long. What name brand mount and rings do you recommend? I want the scope mounted as low as possible. What height rings do I need also? Please, any advice will be extremely helpful. Thanks very much.

Nice rifle, I got one my self[;)],As for scope mounts i am partial to the Leupold brand "Redfield type" Base and rings. The leupold Brand rings is installed corectly won't mar the scope tube finish as redfield or burris does,I have a set of "Low" height on my model 7
with a 2.5-8 x 36mm leupold, I think the low height would clear
your barrel because there is still room under mine with the 36mm OBJ.
I would stay away from the "weaver" type mount/rings they work
but look cheasy on a nice set up like yours, Get the leupold mounts[;)]

Why don't You pop into J&G's and see what they have to offer?

I am partial to Warne rings and bases. Bullet proof.

I like the new alloy Talley lightweights on my Model Sevens. If your's is an older receiver, with the single base hole in the rear bridge,I'd suggest drilling and tapping the second hole to secure that 2pc mounting system. As the base/ring is homogenous, they are pretty damned stout, aesthetically pleasing and light(average about 2 ounces complete).
For a 1pc base/ring system, for the older 3-hole receiver,I think the Leupold DD XP-100 base coupled with Burris posilign rings is the way to go. They mount low,are very rugged and then you've inclination options should you wish.
I've got one with Warne steel Weaver style bases and Burris Signature Zee rings. That too is a nice system,if inclination or concentricity(windage) issues are presented.
Bang for the buck,the Talley's can't be beat IMHO.................0 -
What luck that i happened on this conversation because i am waiting on an 18.5 inch barreled model seven in 7mm-08 to be shipped to me.
I declined the owners Burris compact scope because i just bought a new Leupold VX-1 2x7x33 but i did buy his Leupold base and rings.
He told me that he would put his rear sight back on it and said the rings were the dovetail type.
The fact that he had to take his rear sight off has me thinking they are the low base rings.
What do you think as this is the first set up i have had for years that wasn'r those cheesy weaver set ups.
Another thing if you will.
I have a Simmons 44 mag scope in 2x7 and was wondering if the mounts required for it on that rifle would have to be the taller ones.

I'm a great fan of DD's and have used them on everything from a 378Wby on down.
A very good system IMHO...................0 -
The Leupold 2-7x is the best mousetrap,IMHO and a great match for a Seven.
Great setup..............0 -
My wifes 18.5" M0d-7 (youth) in 7-08 has a Leupold 3-9x40 vx-2 on it, 1 piece Leupold mount and dovetail rings. I was able to get that package mounted with out removing the rear sight (although it's ugly enough that I could see someone wanting to remove it, purely for looks), it looks like it should interfear with vision but I don't notice it thru the scope.
The rings have about a 3/8" shank (if that helps).
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
for the 44 mag , you will need med. rings, good scope. 0
