Armalite AR10 vs DPMS AR10
I just bought an Armalite AR-10T for a lot of money. After shooting and cleaning it, I put the bolt back in the bolt carrier, pushing it all the way in. Once in it would not come back out. Call Armalite and they politely explained that it is stated in an attachment to the manual not to do this. What happens is the bolt rings slide to a wider spot at the rear of bolt and then expand and lock the bolt there. Essentially what must be done to repair it is the bolt has to be forced out, shearing the bolt rings. This I was told. I sent it in as instructed and do not believe it will cost me to repair. I suggested this was a poor design for a combat rifle and was told the rifle was never intended for such application. My question is does the DPMS rifle have a similar design? Also I am curious as to anyone elses experience with this and opinions about whether this is a design flaw. As far as service is concerned, calling Armalite has the best results as the tech was polite, informed and helpful. Emails and return phone calls are not so good....

The Ar-10 was not designed for combat? News to me I always thought it was a predecessor to the M16

I almost would bet money on this if you filled the barrel with air from an air compressor this would send the bolt back out of battery. 0 -
I have a feeling what they meant was unlike its predecessor "this" AR-10 wasn't intended for such application. The current AR-10 is a re-design by the Armalite division of Eagle Arms ... which is not related to the original Armalite.
For years I've had an Stoner SR-25 produced by Knight's Armament Company (KAC), which was a re-designed of the original AR-10 by Eugene Stoner, (the original designer of the AR-10) and never encountered a problem such as you describe ... however, it is designed for such an application (ie battle rifle).
If you go to http://www.biggerhammer.net/stoner/sr25var10/ there is a very good comparison of the two rifles ... overall, because the AR-10 sells for about 1/3 the price of a Stoner it's a good value, but its no battle weapon - it just resembles one.
Edit - I can't speak for the DPMS as I've yet to see one ... one thing I can't understand for the life of me is:
Why in the world did they design it to take the original AR10/SR25 mags (which cost around $100 each when you can find them) instead of something more common like a FAL mag for $10-$20 each?
