gun cleaning ?
It is time to replace my old cleaning kit.
Do any of you use the Otis kits? They look like a good idea, just wondering how well they work. I did a search and only found one reference to them, and that was a give-away
Thanks Kc

Never used one. I use Bore-Tech rods for rifles and Dewey's for hand guns. Well worth the kinda steep prices of each. Those, some Blue Wonder and some brass brushes and patches and a drop or two of oil and you are good to go.

KC, Are you talking about the Otis kits in the round belt carrier? The ones with the steel cable as a rod. I have one that I carry in the field with me. I have used it several times to clear mud out of my barrel or snow, but I would not rely on it as a primary cleaner.

I'm now down to 23 hrs. 5 min 23 sec. per day.[:p] Does any one want their gun cleaned?[:p] You Just got to love it I agree with all the answers and now have some new things to try.[:D]

I still have some great rods that I use from time to time. But I really like a good bore snake. I don't use any patches except for a check on my snake. I have found out that my cleaning of the barrel takes less then 5 min with one. I use a little nitro bore solvent and a snake. When I see that it is clean with a patch then I run a patch with a little gun oil on it. After that I clean the action and other parts with a q-tip.
My 2 cents

I have yet to find a complete kit that really has everything you need to do a quality professional cleaning job on a firearm. I have a wide variety of lubricants, greases, solvents, and cleaners that I use that are not available in any kits together. You really need a good selection of stuff for different firearms. I'd Buy a quality cleaning rod or selection of them depending on how large your firearms collection is. You need an assortment of push jags and eyelet jags along with brushes. You need patches. A good selection of solvents and bore cleaners. A vary wide selection of lubricants and perservatives and greases. Q-tips, brushes, rags. A guns vise. I have a 20 gallon parts cleaner full of mpro-7 for degreasing and cleaning moving components. I'd also recommened getting some blue wonder for touch ups. 0 -
I've yet to see a "kit" which combined more than two good products. I picked up a shooting box at a yard sale chuck a bluck full of cleaning gear. Most of which I heaved as I had better stuff, but this is about 18" L x 8" H x 14" D and has a flap with all sorts of pockets, as well as a series of pockets in the lid. It holds a selection of the chemicals I use, pistol, sectional and cable rods, tupperware containers of jags & brushes, ziplock bags of patches, a full set of gunsmith screwdrivers, Q-tips, toothpicks, brushes of many types . . . you name it. No idea who made it and possibly its original purpose was as a salesman's sample case, but it is best $10 I ever spent. I don't think one can have a serious "kit" in a smaller package, nor do I think anyone markets a "kit" which includes everything a given individual may need. JMHO, but the best "kit" is one which the individual assembles for oneself from the items which have proven their value over time.

I use Dewey rods, Dewey Brushes (All brass, so they don't harm your bore). I'm also a big fan of G96. You can use it on any part of the gun. It is the perfect CLP. 0
