Question for stock repair experts
Do any of you have a method of matching the heavy high gloss, plastic like finish on some Browning shotguns. I
need to blend in a repair.
Thanks : DSC

I tried tung oil, & then polyurethane, without success. No one has come up with anything other than removal of the wood & complete refinishing.
Let me know if you have any better luck.

I had the same problem with an A5. I am not a proponent of poly finishes, and prefer oil types, which may have limited me. The closest I could get was using WATCO, a comercial oil/sealer concoction, then high carnuba content wax. (Rub Rub Rub Rub)
I had to sand a little to remove the nick. Things looked good, but not as good as new,I could still see it, and it bugged me.
My nephew always liked that old gun, so I loaned it to him for a hunt (I really did not know he had brain damage). It returned with some 'behind the seat' hazy scratching. That tipped it. I took all the furniture off, sanded and wooled and rubbed and rubbed and rubbed with oil and finally wax (as above). It looks very fine (not just to me), but I doubt if it is as fine as original.
SO ! I couldn't duplicate it either... but I came real close.
If we do not hang together we will certainly hang separately.0 -
i have yet to try it as i prefer the oil finishes also . but i have thought about using a product called liquid plastic. . i think this can be sprayed on 0 -
May wish to review Brownell's catalog. I believe you will find that it is necessary to remove all the exterior finish to acheive an excellent duplicated refinish. That gloss, as Neal states,is a poly.
May just wish to live with the finish loss.0
