recently bought a Colt New Service; SN 578xx. If theres a informed Colt collector/advisor, could you tell me: a) the year of manufacture, and b) what stocks are correct? hard rubber or wood (or?). thank you for your time.

Serial Number 578XX would have been in the very last part of 1912. The first serial number in 1913 was 58000.
Grips varied, but the basic type on the standard model was checkered hard rubber with COLT within an oval (through c. 1928), and checkered walnut with the rampant colt medallion insert thereafter. Target model pistols were fitted with checkered walnut grips as standard throughout their manufacture. Medallion grip inserts on the walnut, ivory, and pearl stocks began c. 1909. Plain walnut or English walnut with checkering was supplied on special order. Thin stocks were another custom order item. Ivory and pearl grips were available at extra cost; a very few stag stocks also were shipped. Pearl grips far outnumbered ivory, and were made in the following variety of designs: plain, monogrammed, inscribed, eagle, figure of Columbia, horse head, and steer head. Ivory grips were made as follows: Plain, monogrammed, eagle, steer head, and buffalo.
Sorry for the long winded post but as you can see, the grips were a story of their own. Hope this helps!
