Cobray - open bolt
What are they talking about when they ask if a Cobray is an open bolt or not? I've seen this on the M-11's. Thanks

When the trigger is pulled the bolt flies forward, strips a round from the magazine, chambers and fires it. The reason for this design is that in full automatic weapons, a loaded cartridge doesn't sit in a chamber that can get very hot and possibly cook off but stays in the magazine till needed. 0 -
An open bolt gun literally fires from an open bolt . Pull the bolt back, and it is held there by the sear until the trigger is pulled, releasing the bolt to go forward and with a fixed firing pin, strip a round from the mag and fire it. Usually much easier to convert to full auto. Hence the lack of these types. A closed bolt gun strips a round from the mag and the bolt closes. When the trigger is pulled, a striker or hammer hits a moveable firing pin, firing the round.

If you have seen this on the M-11 that would be a .380 auto. very desirable weapon and actually hard to locate. 0 -
The big brother's at the ATF banned all MFG of open bolt weapons due to the easy of conversion to full-auto. I'm not sure when they enacted the ban. Many of the SMG's out there today fire from an open bolt. The Uzi and M-11 are good examples that comes to mind.....
