Winchester 1895 - Were they all blued?
A friend is selling a 1895 Winchester break down rifle manufactured in 1926. Allthough it is in nice condition, I don't see any signs of blueing. I have heard that parts of the rifle were made of nickel steel, but I assumed that they were blued. The rifle almost has the appearance of stainless steal.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Steve...
Yes, they were all blued. It simply sounds like your friend's M95 just has the finish worn off of it. Nickel steel does closely resemble stainless steel when it is devoid of the bluing.

Thanks Bert. You sure know your Winchesters.

Nickel steel refers to the alloy, which is more heat treatable and durable. Before WW1 alloys were just being learned. A case in point is the '03 springfields that had heat treat problems. The nickel in the steel adds toughness as well. 0
