Winchester Mod. 70 - Classic Featherweight

I recently purchased the above Mod. 70 Classic Featherweight with an XTR stock in .308 from a dealer on GunBroker.com and it was discribed as being made in 1970. I called Winchester to confirm this, as I was unable to in my gun collectors book. The closest match that I could locate was listed as a Featherweight Classic, (whereas mine is marked clearly on the gun as a Classic Featherweight) which was made in 1992 to date and has the XTR stock, but was not listed in .308. I was informed by Winchester, when they looked up the Serial number, they confirmed it to be made in 1969-70, but they stated their information was limited as they did not have access to all of the original records. Later in the day I called them back to confirm production dates on several other Winchesters that I have, and talked to a different representative, and just for the heck of it I decided to confirm the earlier information. This guy told me my gun was made in 2000. Now I am really confused. The gun is in immaculant condition, which could indicate recent production, and the serial number G323xxx and as it has only 6 digits, this seemed to confirm the earlier production. I originally thought that I might have a fairly rare production piece, but now I wonder if I got ripped-off. Can anyone advise me??

    "Winchester" started using the "G" prefix in 1970, starting with G941901. they continued into 1981 with G1537134. Then USRA, bought "Winchester from the Olin Corp. From that time on, USRA's has done some strange things with serial numbers. When they went back to the original bolt style, they started a new "G" serial number sqence. My guess is your gun was made by USRA. Regards Dave

    I think you were sold a recently made gun. The "classic" part of the title refers to the return of the controlled round feed with a claw extractor like was used on the pre 64 model 70s. I have a recent classic featherweight in 30.06 that I believe I purchased in 1999(new). It had been on the wall at a gun shop for a year or two before I bought it. The serial number on it starts with G3089xx.It also has six numerical digits........... [:(]
