H&R TopBreak Model 925 - 38S&W Revolver
Looking at a new in the box H&R topbreak model 925 short 2.5" barreled 38S&W caliber revolver. I am seriously considering buying it since the price is too good to pass up on but need some background info on this revolver mfg from 1964 to 1984.
This will be a revolver kept in a dresser drawer or a tractor tool box unless it would have any future collector value then it will rest in the gun safe.
Questions: What is the track record of this particular madel and how effective is the 38S&W ammo and what is the price and availability of new manufacture ammo?
Thanks.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

The gun is robustly made, and should last a long time. It has not been made in a while, so pristine specimens should probably be kept so.
Price of the ammo will be high, since you will have to go to a full service shop to get it, and it will probably have to be special ordered.
Ammo available is all round nose lead and low velocity. Not effective as a stopper at all.

Not a good gun for personal defense. Anemic, hard to find, relatively expensive ammo.
If your paying under $100 for this, add it to your collection, but if you want a defensive piece and want to only spend in the $100-125 range consider a Makarov 9x18 or 380 both of which have more defensive potential with premium ammo.

This is purely an opportunity purchase as the price is well under $100 total and surely not for a defensive weapon as Bill Ruger takes care of that end. Have several other modern H&R revolvers but this was the first I have seen in 38S&W and a topbreak to boot. Appreciate all the feedback, thanks.

I have 5 38 S&W pistols. This is a good example of a cartridge that needs to be reloaded. It is a cheap cartridge to reload. I use 38 hollow based wadcutter bullets seated about 1/2 way in the case. The origonal bullet is a true .360" instead of .358". 0 -
actually, the .38 SW compares very well with the .38 special AT CLOSE RANGE. Especially if you handload and can go with some jacketed hollow points, it would be a fine gun to have; a cheap semi auto can malfunction, but have yet to see a cheap new (more or less) revolover that failed to work perfectly.
