    If this is the top thumb safety, it has a tendency to be sticky when new. Had a problem with a thumb safety on a model 590 which when taken apart and cleaned and lubed with some graphite gunslick solved the problem. Taking the weapon down was no problem, two pins and the whole trigger assembly comes out in one piece. Do it slowly and look at things carefully. This allows you to work on the safety. If nothing else...take it to a gunsmith.

    If the safety only moves about 1/3 of the way forward, odds are that the little finger on the inside of the reciever that attaches to the safety button is on backwards. Been there done that.
