1911 question
If you wanted a good 1911 would it be better to buy the Springfield and add the options you wanted yourself, or buy a Kimber that is already tricked out, or something else that I have not mentioned? You guys generally give good advice so that is what I am trying to get again. Thanks guys!

I shoot the same setup on my 1911's and have never really had any problems. If the slide is fitted properly it seems to make no difference in wear.

AMT had a problem with stainless slides and frames in the developement of the hardballer. Galling on the the slide rails would appear after a few hundred rounds. They solved the problem by adding an alloy or a heat treating process to one or the other.Anyhow thats the story i got when i asked about all the stainless /blue combinations when they 1st appeared on the range. 0 -

yep the blue will eventualy wear off and the stainles won't {lol}
as far as the combo together ,there should be no problem
amt shure came up with a good one to cover their sloppy frame to slide fit didn't they???,i have one of them ,and with a bit of work they are ok shooters ,amt give themselves a bad rep right off the bat due to lack of quality control ,most aparent in their frame to slide fit

Mostly this is just visual. Two tone is popular. However, at one time a number of MkIV S-70 Gold Cup shooters mounted their slides on Caspian frames. The w/ the S-80 you could buy the GC that way.
Quality of materials and fit is what makes 'em accurate, not the color, that's just "eye candy".
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
For what it's worth, I was told that the reason this is done is that if you have stainless/stainless you will get a "gauling" of the metal and that if you use two unlike metals this will not happen.
Would like to hear from a "true gunsmith" if this is correct or just a sales ploy so parts on hand can be sold. I was reading this post in the hope of learning more about the subject.

The problem with the Hardballer galling was the alloy of SS they were using. They changed to a different alloy and the problem went away.
As far as mixing blue & SS.....doesn't make a bit of difference in shooting. It's strictly a matter of aesthetics. Some like blue guns, some like shiney guns, some like two tone guns......there are even a few weird souls that like plastic guns. [:D]0 -
GEEGUY & XRACER...I just did some checking and yes they did add an alloy but i still don't know if it was to the frame or slide. Yes, the stainless on stainless galls if both metals are the same. My Longslide AMT was well fitted out of the box except for a crappy trigger. I remember the factory suggesting mixing castrol 30wt & lubriplate white grease to lube the slide rails for break in. What a mess that made! I replaced the bbl with a douglas diamond lapped comp bbl and killed thousands of bowling pins and steel plates without a malfunction. 0 -

ya know its statements like these that can annoy a person ,i have met many gun smiths ,some don't know their {a} from a hole in the ground ,and ask that same question to each of them and you will get a different answer or opinion ,
the question has already been answered correctly ,obviously you want to hear a different answer
if you do a bit of research you will find ,wilson combat,caspian,les baur ,all use the same type of metal on their frame and slide ,some carbon steel ,stainless ,some cast some forged
it is strictly cosmetic ,the problem with the amt was the quality of the metal and its poor machining ,with very little work can be smoothed out
there are a lot of essex frames with Remington rand or randell slides made today by individuals ,only because they are cheap to put together

This is an open board (mostly) in which we try to learn as much as possible for each other. Many comments are made and you are correct that there are many opinions from everyone's experience and expertize. However, don't get "upset" because you believe a question has been answered to your satisfaction. The metal composition on why some SS/SS gauls and some doesn't was where I was going, and from my experience I have experienced the gauling. The "real gunsmith" comment was not directed anywhere or at any answer prior, just was looking for a metal expert.

I did not get upset, I said annoying ,it appears the question has been answered in both ways ,he did not say he wanted a metal expert ,a "true gunsmith" ,while a gunsmith may be a expert machinist ,it couldn't be further from a metallurgist
All metal that come into contact with other metal and has the amount of friction involved will have some galling ,fatigue ,and eventually break down of the metal ,it doesn't matter if the metal is the same or different
are the parts that have friction in your car all different metals ? ,no not always ,and not because the metal having contact has to be different ,if this were true your front end parts that wear would all have to be made of different metal ,or your front end would fall apart ,the gears in the rear end would break down as well
