Brand of Guns?????

I am relatively new to big game hunting and I am starting my collection of rifles. I am curious to know if there are any REAL differences between savage, browning, remington, and ruger. I know that they all have their slight differences in the way they are made, but is the quality in any one gun that much better, or worth twice the price? If so, why? Which one(s)?

Also, I have a savage .243 and I am lookig for the "big gun" next and I am wondering what the best size cartridge is to get; 300 mag, 7mm mag, 300wsm, or 7wsm? Thank you for all your help.

    If your in the service and trying to build a collection on your paybase you'll be at it awhile.

    However, setting income level aside ... you will need a "mid-cal" in your battery ... something 30 to 35 cal. but not an ultra/megga ... magnum, or you'll just be blowing bullets through game and losing them so you'd have a waste of time, waste of ammo, and waste of game.

    As to the makers and differences in price ... just like buying cars, what feels good, what looks good ... etc. Ruger makes a good firearm for the money, but then so does CZ ... I think of these makers as providing "value" lines.

    Lastly, hit a few gun shows, especially this time of year, and you not only will get a chance to shoulder different makes, you can find some very good bargains.

    If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

    I am going to use the gun for all types of hunting. I am just getting into big game hunting, so I will be hunting all kinds of animals. I like to hunt and just shoot for sport (fun, target, clay). I want my collection to give me a rifle for every occasion, yet I do not want to buy every gun out there. I dont really care about brand names I just want the rifle to shoot good and last a long time but if i do not need to pay $800 for a rifle that works as well as a $400 rifle then I wont. Thanks for the help.

    Depends on what you hunt here in USA 30-06 - 7 mm mag will take anything in the lower 48 go to alaska canada grizzley need 7mm mag or 300 mag On the type of gun a 400.00 will work like a 800.00 will just get what you pay for

    For all around hunting/target usage look at rifles chambered for either the 308Win or 30-06. Ammo is very common and inexpensive. Both have enough power for "normal" hunting (if your going after Grizz, Brown or Polar Bear than we'll talk about your heavy caliber although the 30-06 can, has, and will do that job also) anywhere in the Americias.
    Rifles, handle as many different brands as you can (shoot them if there owners will let you). A rifle will last your lifetime and you can pass it on to your grandchildren so even a $1000 rifle is inexpensive (1K over 25 years is what? $40 a year?) Choose the one that feels the best to you, your going to have it a long time. The rest is Ford-vs-Chevy.
    Personaly I prefer a Mauser (like the CZ is) or something close (like a pre-64 Win M-70), but that's just me.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    You didn't specify what type of "big game" you were planning to hunt. After checking your profile, I see that you live in/around San Antonio, TX. Only big game around there is white tail deer, feral pigs, and javelina pigs. Any caliber from a 243 Win/6mm Rem up through the 257 Roberts and 25-06 to the 270 Win and 30-06/ 308 calibers will work nicely. Heck, you could shoot any of the above mentioned species with a .223. If you are planning to buy a new rifle, you might check into the Savage...they are one of the best shooting rifles out of the box that I have found. And that doesn't mean that Ruger, Winchester, and Remington's are bad. But the Savage's are what I would term a wonderful package for the money.

    I hunt down there every year and I shoot a 25-06, Custom Mauser. It hits hard, shoots really flat, and will reach out and touch whatever you want without breaking the bank for ammo. If you reload, you can tune your ammo to the rifle and save money. Whatever caliber you want from whatever manufacturer, don't scrimp on the scope, and practice a LOT! Good luck.
