Who does parkerizing on the east coast/Virginia-North Carolina area? I am looking to get some Remington 1100's done, thanks in advance...

I made a tank out of a 4' long piece of 6" PVC. I put caps on both ends cut out a 3" wide groove in the side of the pipe and installed a hot water tank element for heat in one end. I clamp it up in my bech vises to hold it.

I have had mixed results with my solutions. I did a russian m44 which came out pitch black so I figured I was good. I tried the frame on my para last week, but no matter how long I cooked it all I could get was a nice grey.

    Oh well

I believe you can still get finishing tanks from Brownells in various sizes. I have had great results with a home brew recipe I use, Black as night on everything except Colt manufactured military slides. Never takes for some reason. Here's the recipe link:

    Good luck!

That kithen parkerizing sounds pretty easy I will definetly try it with small parts. I would like to parkerize some of my long guns so I guess I will buy a tank from brownells. Any idea on how to regulate temperature in the tank?. Also, if I dont have a sandblaster, Whats a good way to remove the old finish in a way that the parkerizing agent will easily be accepted by the metal.

    Thanks for your help

4 parts water to 1 part muratic acid will remove old finish and etch the parts to take a finish. only takes a minute or less to remove the finish.

So do you scrub the parts with anything or just let them sit in the muratic acid solution? Its sounds really easy.

Just dip them in. I use a 5 gallon bucket, just do one end of a long gun at a time. So fast you can see it working.

Yup, the acid bath works great. I used it also before I got my sandblaster. Do your best to degrease first. I use carburator cleaner. Works great and dries fast with no filming.

You can buy an electric tea kettle (water heater upper) at any home store, put the parts in a glad wear container in the heated water. Use a kitchen thermometer to regulate temp. Works like a charm and costs less than $20.

can you explain that process in a little more detail rolpher? Wont the element melt the glad wear container??

    Thanks

Glad is safe up to and beyond boiling temp. water regulates the heat. When you're all done, toss the glad. Works!

Regardless of what you use to prepare the metal for parkerizing, be sure and protect the bore and chamber. Get a pack of different size corks, and plug it up. You do not want them etched.

HOLY COW! Good point Hangfire, I forgot to mention that. I had a group of 1911 barrels, all but one chrome lined and I didn't know it. The lined milspec ones came out great. The other was wasted. Protect the bores.
