what is the cheapest way to ship a handgun leagally?

    To whom do you want to ship the handgun? (Not the name, but type of person: individual, licensed collector, dealer, manufacturer, or repair shop.)

    Also, will you be shipping it within your state, or to another state?

    Is there a local gun shop where you are a regular customer & whose owner might be willing to do you a favor?

    I am shipping out of state to an ffl who has won the gun in an auction. there is a gun shop were i do business but i was hoping since i am sending to ffl i could do it myself and save money.

    Within your state you can ship direct to an individual by USPS, and Priority mail, insured, w/ delivery confirmation for a typical size and weight handgun should be under $20 unless you buy a heck of a lot of insurance.

    You can also ship direct to a ffl licensed dealer, repair shop or manufacturer of your gun, but each has somewhat different processes, but again unless your required to do the FedX Overnight $35 ripoff, you'll most likely be shipping UPS and again it should be under $20.

    You can not use USPS across state lines unless you are an ffl.


    If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

    No offense meant Contender Man, but it is my understanding that a individual who doesn't have a "01" FFL can't use the USPS for shipping handguns. Doesn't matter weather if the shipment is interstate or intrastate.

    UPS is OK if they accept the shipment from you. By Federal Law you are supposed to notify the carrier your shipping a handgun.

    My understanding is that UPS refuses to accept handgun shipments in most cases from individuals without Federal Firearms Licenses.

    Because of the above, I personally use FedEx for shipping.

    Yes, but....

    FEDEX & UPS have the same rule (& pretty much the same rates): handguns must be shipped Next Day Air. (Hopefully the terms of your auction require the buyer to pay shipping this way.) You must ship from a UPS or FEDEX company counter, not a parcel store. You should declare the package as "Firearm for repair", as individuals cannot ship firearms for sale (their rule, not the law). Expect to pay $30-50.

    Your local gun shop may be willing to ship USPS Priority for you; that may only cost $10. If they don't charge too high a fee, you may consider asking them to mail it for you.

    Nmyers is correct make sure you list it firearm for repair and you have to go directly to the ups hub to send it. Make sure you take the dealers ffl with you and it would not hurt for him to state it is going to him for repair. The ups and fed x have made it a Major pain and expense for us to send an occasional pistol/revolver to any ffl dealer because they employ thiefs in ther ranks and can not keep track of a crappy diaper if they had too!.
