sniper rifles
I am looking for a near sniper quality rifle without the high cost of a sniper rifle. I like the ballistic charts of the .338 lapua but the brass alone is very expensive. And how dose the 338 win mag compare the the lapua? I would like a larger caliber rifle (>308) that is capable of shooting 1000 yds accuartly with enough retained energy.

why are the sniper rifles mostly .308 cal.? was it the availability of ammo or was that the most accurate cal. of the time. i've not been in the service, so i don't know if i missed something. i know there has to be a logical reason for the caliber as there has been more accurate calibers made for quite some time. i am just curious. 0 -
This is my view, so don't take it as fact...
The .308 win is essentially the same as the 7.62x51 NATO (I think, or was it the x54?). So, ammo would be widely available and is also relatively low in recoil. However, as of late, there has been Marine shooters shooting competition with the .300 win mag so maybe that's the way its going.
The way I see it, the .308 will work out to what, 800 yards or so, if a shot is needed beyond that then they'll probably use the .50 BMG anyway...0 -
Scout/Snipers, (or 8541's) are a Military occupation. therefore, it follows that most military shooters use the ammo issued by their military. ours is the 308, but that's gonna change; I hope!

7.62x54 is Russian
7.62x51 is NATO for .308
Cartridge has good balistics. Competition out to 1000 yds. (Camp Perry),
New cart. are starting to turn up and they are good. All things change, many for the best.
30-06 was a "sniper round" up to and including 'nam used mostly in specially set up 03-A3 (think desig. might have then be A4 for that config.) and M-1D, but during 'nam until the military caught up, there were Civilain rifles like the BBL being brought in.
The M-14, accuraized (sp?) was probably the start of the .308 and has since evolved in mil desig.

now to add a moneky wrench in your question.....
currently naval special warfare (SEAL) snipers are armed with an array of sniper rifles. an array? yes currently it depends on the mission as to what they will use....
they are armed with high quality 223s, the sr25 in 308, the remington sendero in 300 win mag and the 50.
the 223s are a great sniper rifle out of a helo for cover fire while entering houses/buldings. the sr 25 is mainly used out to 500 yards and the win mag out to 1000. well the 50 is used for bigger stuff if the mission calls for it.

Look at it this way. The rifle is a tool used by the marksman (I don't like to use the word sniper). A carpenter uses diferent hammers for different jobs so the shooter can and should use the proper tool for the expected job. There is more to being a sniper than just being a marksman and there's a heck of a lot of shooters that aren't snipers.

For the record...the "good" sniper rifle in 'Nam was the militarized version of the Remington 40XB with stainless steel barrel plated with iron to take a blue job. Early versions were the 03-13 Springfield in 30-06, then changed to the .308 Winchester cartridge when the Remington came to be in country. Usually topped with a Redfield 4x12 Widefield w/ integral "range finder" scope.
