.300 winmag whitetail load

I have a Ruger #1 in .300 winmag that I bought fot Elk in NM, but I now hunt in PA for whitetail. The 190 grain Hornidys I loaded for penetration on the elk just go thru the whitetail. What would be a better load for this application? Maybe some sort of ballistic tip like a v-max or Nosler? I would like to stick with my H4831 powder. Thanx

    I shoot 300 Win Mags out of a Winchester Model 70. I hunt whitetails in Missouri with it. I use 150 Gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips with 73 Gr. of H414. Unfortunately, I can't remember what primers I used, I think CCI Magnums. I am getting somewhere around 3200 fps out of them.

    It is loaded a little heavy, but my gun handles it ok.

    The deer on the other hand don't care for it much.[:D]

    You can't judge a book by its cover, but that doesn't mean you can't do a report on it.

    You also can use a soft point 160 grain and back off alittle on the powder.

    As suggested by others back down the load and change the bullet type. If your accuracy falters at reduced/changed cart. level. Put the big boy up and move down the rifle scale some. Try the TC combination you asked me about.

    If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

    I've seen deer shot with ballistic tips... You'll never find them in any gun I use to shoot an animal I intend to eat! They work great for varmits though.

    I shoot Hornady customs (I don't reload yet) out of my .300 and so far that's been the best bullet I've found for optimal expansion without too much expansion or fragmentation.

    You got it right, Jake. I think I'll look into one of the Contender ideas Ken gave me. Just wonder how the JDJ'S might perform? Thanx all. Earl

    I use the Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets in all my deer guns. I too live in PA. In my .300 Win mag I use the 180 gr BT with 70 grains of IMR 4350 in Federal cases with a Fed 215 Mag primer. I can put 3 rounds into a dime at 100 yds. Just a thought for you! IMy main deer gun is a .270 with 130 gr BT with 55 grains of IMR4350 Reminton cases and Federal 210 primer. I hope this helps and good luck on your next deer hunt.
