MODEL 70 .243 PRE 64

Hi,
I have a .243 winchester model 70 with a 26" heavy barrel and
a long (about 3/4 length of gun) lyman scope.
Could anybody tell me how to tell a pre 64? and how much this
gun might be worth?

    The most obvious pre-64 feature is the Mauser type action with the non rotating extractor.Drop off a serial number, and you'll get a year of mfg.

    Starta ser# 5648.., last two don't remember. guns at mom's.

    Not up on current values, but it was mfg in 61-62. To get an accurate value you should post condition, and if it is original finish and/or any alterations[Reblue, refinish, pad installed etc].

    85ELDO, You have described a pre-'64 Model 70 Varmint Rifle. The Varmint Rifle is the 7th most scarce of the 14 styles of the pre-'64 model 70.
    There were 904 rifles made in .220 Swift cal. and 4,614 in .243 cal. The scope you describe is probably a Lyman Super Targetspot. The value of the gun will depend on the condition and modifications, it came drilled and tapped for the scope blocks so that is not a modification. The scope, if complete with lens covers, no lens separations, damage, etc. is worth about $400. My 1999 Blue Book shows a value of $850 if the rifle is in 90% original finish.

    I have a Pre-64 featherweight in .308, in very good condition. If I decide to part with it, what would be a fair price? Also have its baby brother, made in 80s or 90s, .308 featherweight. Any idea on that one? Its perfect, and unfired.
