.308 Schmidt-Rubin K-31 ?

Here is a good question: Can the Schmidt-Rubin K-31 be rechambered in .308 and if so is it cost efficient to do so?

The reason I am asking many years ago I used to hunt with a fellow who used a Schmidt-Rubin K-31. He said that he had it rechambered in .308 by the local gun smith. Is this possible or was he just pulling the leg of an impressionable teenager at the time?

    Yes it can be done. A lot of them were converted, I think by interarms to .308 in the 60s. It isn't really cost effective in that the ammo is not so expensive in 7.5X55. Also handloading is easy enough, no tricks for this caliber. If you want to do it it would consist of unscrewing the barrel, cutting off a bit, re cutting the threads on the barrel, headspacing, and reaming. Good to do if you can do it yourself, but if that were the case I doubt you would have asked.

    Like Jonk said ... it's possible, but it isn't worth the cost and effort if you reload. If not, it just isn't worth messing with as the majority of the Swiss ammo is only good for plinking, or it is kinda hard to find and expensive.

    Heck you can get a very good, used, Kimber (of Oregon) with synthetic stock using a 96 action in 308 for under $300. And they are good shootin rifles.

    If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

    New, reloadable, reasonably priced 7.5 Swiss brass and loaded ammo is now available from Graf & Sons.

    Thanks for the input. the fellow that Iused to hunt with said he bought the rifle mailorder complete with scope and sporter style stock. Sure looked cool enough back then. Ordered a K-31 the other day just for the heck of it.
