Contender barrel locked on frame
I have recently purchased a contender with five Octogon barrels. When I put the 44 or 256 on my modern frame they would not open. I had to remove the grip and trip the latch. Thompson said to mail them in with the frame(s). I do not wish to mail. The latch appears to be slightly different on those two barrels. Maybe someone has experienced this and can give advise. Serial #4xxx. Thank You

Never thought of doing it that way. When my .223 barrel sticks I knock out the pin & remove the barrel. Only happens sometimes & the other barrels work fine. Would you only have to send it in once & they
would fix the frame or could you have to do it again for a new barrel?0 -
i am a gunsmith and this happened to me too.the problem was the locking lug on the barrel.i chucked the barrel ,chamber up in a padded vise. took a med. cut file and took a little metal off at a time until i got good lockup and the barrel released with normal pressure. hope this helps 0 -
They wanted to replace the latch on each barrel. Having the frame for fitting purposes and inspection. These two barrels will not function on either of my frames. I have never mailed any of my guns and I am skepitcal of doing so. Thank-You for your replies. 0 -
Happens when you put an old barrel on a new frame. Guy I bought the barrel from sent the whole shebang back to T/C for fixin', and I had it back in 3 weeks. Insure for $1000. You might get lucky.
Now get on down to the shipper, pack it well, (unloaded, minus grips, attachments, scopes, bases, etc.), and send it in!

With 95% +/- certainty you can cure this by installing the new style locking lugs as there should not be that much difference in frame sizes to require fitting of bbl. to frame.
I have bbls. that date back to 1968 and they work in every frame I've got ... including the new G2. However, I've updated the locks. Maybe I've just been lucky and your not.
Anyway, if your not comfortable doing this yourself (TC will sell you that parts) let TC do it. Make sure you understand their repair return process, and send your stuff insured with delivery confirmation. No point in over insuring as if you file a claim you will have to prove the value so you'd just be wasteing money.
The barrels are doing you no good the way they are, so either sell them, or fix 'em.
Lastly, if your frame S/N is 4xxx you have anything but a "modern frame", and there should be no reason that early barrels would not work unless someone has monkeyed around with either the barrels or your frame ... might just be another reason to let TC check 'em out.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0
