Need manual for Winchester Model 12 16GA shotgun

My sister gave me my Grandfather's Winchester Model 12 16GA shotgun this evening. It has been locked in a cedar chest for years. I have no experience with shotguns. I want to field strip it and clean it thoroughly, but need instructions.

I couldn't find a manual on the Winchester site, or anywhere else. Could someone help?

    LOL, Tools, I had remington on my mind - don't know why. I'm still looking.

    Can you tell me how to field strip it?

    Hello AClay47...

    It is real simple to do;

    1. Make sure the gun is empty.
    2. Pull the slide handle (pump) all the way to the rear.
    3. At the top end of the magazine tube, locate the large diameter pin that runs perpendicularly through the magazine (it should be sticking out about 7/16" on the left hand side of the barrel), and push it through to the opposite side of the tube, then turn it counterclockwise until it stops.
    4. Gently pull the slide handle all the way forward until it stops (it will go approximately 4" further than normal).
    5. Still holding on to the slide handle and the buttstock, twist 1/4 turn counterclockwise, and then pull forward on the barrel assembly... you should now have the in its "Takedown" configuration.

    That is about all the further you need to disassemble a Model 12 for routine cleaning.

    Bert : I agree that it's simple, but I sure have seen some messsed up jobs by people when they don't have the action bar far enough forward or the threads lined up. Procede with caution!!!

    There are a number of books by NRA and others on the subject of firearms assembly/disassembly that will have the info you want. I checked out one well known auction site just now and found a number of them listed. Cheap too, some below $5. Hope this helps.
