Stock Ding Problem???
I've got a "ding" in a fairly new walnut stock. I need some suggestions / recommendations on how I can remove it. Its about one-quarter inch in size.

You can put a wet band-aid over it and leave it overnight also.

If the stock ding still has finish in it, the wood grain won't raise. You just about have to strip the stock, raise the grain, then refinish. The wet towel wrap will probably work if the moisture can get to the wood. Be careful applying the wet cloth/hot iron so as not to damage the finish on the rest of the stock.

Depends on what kind of finish is used on the stock. This is one reason I like the "old timey" finishes like linseed oil. It is LOT easier to fix "booboos".
You can carefully gentleman the area of the ding with a needle to help the steam/moisture get down into the wood fibres.
This is a crap shoot- the stock may wind up having to be stripped and redone no matter what.

That's why I use Marine Exterior Spar Varnish for a sealer coat, then finish off with a dozen or so coats of tung oil.

If its a Real Hunting Rifle you will get many more Dings even if you
are Very Carefull in the woods,If it truely bothers you the Steam
thing really does work [;)]
