Winchester 1894 barrel size
I just received a model 1894 Winchester rifle with a half round barrel. Barrel length is standard 26 inches. The end of the barrel measures 21/32 seconds. Is this considered a very light rifle or is it just standard. Appears that it tapers about 3/32 seconds.

I don't have my references handy at the moment, but 3/32" sounds about right.

WildBill, The extralight barrels were 9/16 at the muzzle, the standards were 11/16. Of course they were not always exact. 0 -

In Auther Pickle's book on 94's, he states " Half round octagon barrels are rare on the Model 1894 and will command a considerable primium. He goes on to caution about fakes. He continues with; "Check the transition from octagon to round very carfully. It should be about a fraction of an inch in front of the forearm tip or cap, uniform and smooth in about a 45 degree angle, and should show no signs whatsoever of lathe marks, polishing or wear not commennsurate with the condition of the rest of the gun". He then states; "If the octagan barrel has been turned in a lathe, the barrel address will be partially obliterated at the point where the transition occurs".
If you are new to this, especially Winchesters, Pickle has 3 volumes on Winchester levers. They are well worth the price. They are called FOR COLLECTORS ONLY WINCHESTER LEVER ACTION REPEATING FIREARMS.

Many thanks Hunter and Taperloc. I must have gotten extremely lucky , cause this Baby is about 95 percent , 1/2 Oct, 1/2 round, 38-55 . Marbles front sight with a Nickel Steel barrel , deluxe wood and Mfg in 1907. Just about peed my britches when this guy asked if I wanted to buy. Probably never see one as good as this in a lifetime. Really made my year. Thanks again 0
