45 VS 50
I will be bying the Thompson center Omega soon. I will be using it mainly for deer. Is the 50 Cal a better choice than the 45? Is there a big difference? Just wondering what you may think.

I personally would go with the .45 caliber. The .50 wouldnt be bad but I just see it as alittle too much.Either one will take them down. 0 -
pscgrad, I purchased the Omega and used it during the deer black powder season here in Ohio and must say that the 45 is very impressive. Very accurate and stops them easily. I think either the 45 or the 50 is fine but I wanted to try the 45 since I have had several of the 50 cal and for whatever reason never really satisfied with them. I use the 195 gr power belt and 150 gr pyrodex pellets. Applied 0 -
I've always prefered .50's, you can always sabot them to .45 or .44 (if you prefer), but it's sure hard to stick a .50 down a .45.
It matters not how many times you've been knocked down. What matters is how many times you've gotten back up.0 -
The other advantage of the larger bore is you could use it on larger game if you should decide you wished to do this. 0 -
I have a T/C Omega 50 and love it. I'm sure either one would do the job on deer. But I'm pretty green with black powder! You're on track - the T/C Omega is the way to go for hunting!
I heard that the .50 cal was the best choice because there is simply more stuff out there for this calibre. If you want something different, go for the 45![8D]0 -
If your sure that your hunting grounds and game is not going to appreciably change go with the 45, if you think you may get out West or up North to hunt some of the large bodied beasts, then get a 50 and load it down. The weight difference in the Omega at 45 and 50 isn't really a big deal.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
Another idea: many side-lock guns can be purchased and buy an extra barrel in the desired caliber. Some guns can use .54, .50, and .45 all with the same stock. 0
