What would a good factory load be for self defence in a 38sp with 4 inch barrel?

Any good 125-158 grain hollow point works well.Check out CCI-Speer Gold Dot +p hollow points,I think they are the best performing hollow point out there.Other than that +p Federal Hydra-Shoks are excellent as well. 0 -
I am partial to the Glaser safety slug, no worries about over penetrating and extremely effective 0 -
Winchester silver tips. Soft lead aluminum jacket hollow point designed for maximum expansion at close range from a short barrel.Not the most accurate round,but at close range is a one shot stopper. 0 -
about any hollowpoint will work just fine. I wouldn't bother using any FMJ rounds.

Iconoclast is right. Check out the rbcd.net web page. The Sky Marshal ammo demos online with clay are interesting to see. I found out about the Sky Marshal ammo in my CCW class a couple of years ago and have a couple of clips of them in my 9 mm. 0 -
I don't remember where I 'heard' this, maybe here. Since lawyers make me gag, I don't think it was at a social event, but here it is.

158 gr +P Federal Nyclads or another mfr equivalent. Hollowpoint expansion is never a given, but this type load has the best track record.

Glaser safety slug, shoot one into a chest cavity they will be picking shot out of his head and a$$
it is called a safety slug because it wont go through walls or ricochet ,gives a .38 the ballistic equivalent to a .44 mag at impact
last coroners report I read to date no one has every survived a center mass shot from a safety slug

Buy any factory ammo, preferrable what police use...or used to use in their 38 revolvers. If you can, buy the ammo at a big store like Walmart. You want to appear as "average" as you can when you sit in front of the jury, and the other side is trying to make you look like a gun-nut just looking for someone to try out his new "exploding" ammo on.
The suggestion of Silvertips is a good one. Same with the Glaser Safety Slugs...because of the word "Safety" in the name. Avoid Nyclads because of their old reputation of being the "cop killer" and at one time not marketed to the public. It will all be in how it "appears" in a courtroom--not how it really was.
By the way: I am the one who has been posting this dissertation every so often.

mballai, I would suggest contacting the company directly. When I visited with the company reps two years ago, some LE agencies had begun using their ammo and they should have some data / testimonials now.

go to the gb auction site ,typ it in you will find them ,or try a few gun shops ,gun shows ,they come in a blister pack ,6 rounds per pack 18.00 and up
as far as shooting a person period.is another debate ,bottom line a justifiable shooting ,is well,justifiable
as long as you ,the gun are legal protect yourself ,above is good advice ,the only other legal problem as far as what bullet ,is reloads are a no no ,use a factory ammo always
