i'm looking at a colt ar15 at a gun shop . how can i date the gun .it is a sporter with the serial # 016296 . the price of the gun screams pre-ban and would only be worth thecost if it turns out to be so .it is in fine condition , it has a 16" barrel with what i think is a flash suppresor , a round foreend ,but no bayonet lug .the asking price is $1300 + tax. is that a fair price ? thanks for any help provided , steve 0 -
Dabler;
If you are considering the AR15, I suggest you go to ar15 dot com and check it out. There are several posts with questions like yours. IMHO you get what you pay for...

By saving the $75 you will not get the case, sling, mag, owners manual, etc... that comes with the complete rifle. If you really want to save some money you could get a stripped lower receiver and a parts kit and put the whole thing together. Get the Marine Corps manual that covers assembly and it's pretty easy. I would get the upper that is factory assembled if you don't want to buy any special tools.

Where do I save?0 -
Go to http://olyarms.com and check out their kits. Everything except the stripped lower for $449. Add your $95 lower and you have a complete rifle for less than $600 brand new.
Steve
I just checked http://model1sales.com They have the kits for $4000 -
I was checking out the Ar15.com web sight and came accross this web sight. They are talking very highly about these Mega and stringer lowers for 99.00 ea. anybody heard of them or used them??

it's cheaper buying the 2 halves because the manufacturer doesn't pay the excise tax (11%) unless an upper is sold along with a lower... tax evasion to buy them in pieces and slap the together but I'm not sure anyone pursues that...
