Shipping guns to Australia

I would like to send a Shilo Sharps (modern rifle) to Australia. Have any of you done this and what kind of hoops do I need to jump through. I know they can still have single shot rifles for now any way. Thanks, Larry

    snowshoe, I have several ammo customers in Oz; if you can't get the answer elsewhere, I can contact them. I do know it is a witch and a half to send virtually anything shooting-related Down Under, however innocuous.

    Yep, you can send it to me please. I'll organize it. You'll obviously have to take care of the paperwork on the US side. I ahve a collection of firearms. Today's aquisition was a Colt Lightning 44 mfg in 1884. WE can possess firearmsI'll contact customs tomorrow to enquire about the paperwork.

    Spoke to Aussie Cusoms the other day about this. firearms can be imported as long as they pass a Safe test. The weapon is armed (not loaded) and is subjected to a few taps with a rubber hammer to see if it accidentally discharges. If it was manufactured AFTER 1899, it will need a safe indicator (eg.red dot) when on safe/fire and will need a safe button/pin. The person to whom the firearm is consigned will need an import permission from the police firearms section in the state in Oz where it is imported to. Thsi is a form number 507B or something close to that. If the person to whom it is being consigned to doesn't have the correct permit for that type of firearm they most likely won't get the police permission.
    For Example, I personally have a firearms license to own rimfire .22's (as long as they are not semi-auto), shotguns (again no semi-auto's AND no pumps), center fire rifles (no semi-auto's). Pump centerfires and .22's are allowed, as well as lever actions. (I can hear you all howling down here).So with police import permission I can import. I could also do so for other categories of firearms if I held the proper authority ie. handguns, semi-auto rifles and shotguns, pump shotguns etc.
    If the firearm is pre-1900 it doesn't require a mechanical safe but would be required to be safe to possess.
    If any firearm doesn't pass a safe test when customs performs it, the receiver can re-export it, have it fixed, or surrender it.
    If anybody wants to they can look up the laws on a government web site. I can post that next time.
