.17 HMR Question
Can someone tell me what length barrel is required for a full powder burn of the .17 HMR?
Thanks

At least 21 inches. I have a custom 18 (maker unknown) and a 21 factory. At same distances from muzzle w/ cronograph the velocity is higher ... not a lot but repeatedly higher so that would suggest to me that there is/was not full burn in the 18.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
Bullberry did a test where they took a 22" barrel and tested velocities. Then they took the same barrel and reduced it's length in 1" increments all the way down to 10". What they found was that optimum barrel length for the 17HMR was 19". They didn't gain in velocity over that but the real surprise was that they didn't lose much velocity all the way down to 10"!!!! I get 2700 fps from the Marlin VS and the Savage 93 and get 2326 fps from a 10" Savage Striker! Those velocities have been checked repeatedly on a lot of bench sessions! Even if the chrony is lying on the 2700 the spread is still not much of a velocity drop! GHD 0 -
My Ruger M7722 with a Green Mountain aftermarket barrel chrony's at 2625 avg with the Hornady cartridges.
Keep off the Ridgeline0 -
Thanks for the info guys.
