winchester/marlin 410s

aloha,

it has been a dogs age since i have been on the site. our uncle has me running throughought the middle east.........


i got on the auction side last nite and was looking again at the 9410 packer and i noticed that marlin now makes a lever 410. can someone tell me the pros and cons of both guns? i have owned both marlin and winchester levers and both have been great guns.

is the marlin drilled and tapped?

how happy are users with these guns?

    Only downside I heard about the Marlin was that they are chambered for the 2.5" shell rather than the 3" magnum.

    No, Winchester does not make a 3 inch BUT let me tell you, the 2 1/2 inch .410 is not all that bad. I reload with a mec 600 and using #8, # 8 1/2 or #9 the pellet count isn't all that bad, as long as you keep under 30 yards which is really what the 410 is designed for. Just stay away from 4,5 and 6 shot and you'll be fine. Also you can single column load 3, .30 cal. buck shot and get a pretty interesting load also, I think it's No.0 but whatever it is it's around .30
    I didn't know Marlin was doing the .410 but they were the ones who originated it in a lever gun between 1929 and 1932 (great timing!)

    I recently looked hard at both of these guns. I didn't buy one (yet), but, decided that when I do, it will be the Marlin. I compared them side by side and the Marlin was of far better fit, finish and quality. I don't recall if the Marlin was tapped for a scope mount, but, since the look and feel of this gun is much like the other Marlin lever guns, I would say it is. Depending on what you want to do with the gun, there is nothing wrong with the 2 1/2" shells and they seem to be readily available. The action on either of these guns wouldn't accomodate the 3" shells which is the reason for the chambering. Check around for prices because they seem to be all over the place.

    I have both of them, I will say that I like the Marlin better, it is just a better made weapon, the receiver is thicker, and the side eject is always a plus, and I have never had a problem with jams. Nothing against the winchester I love it to, I have had problems with ejecting. They are both good, and you cannot go wrong with either one, I just think the Marlin is made with thicker metal all around.
