What kind of gas blow back system does the mini-14

I know there are four basic kinds of blow back
1. straight

2.retarted

3.delayed

4. I don't remember the name .

What kind does the ruger mini-14 use?

IT"S better to die by fire then serve by force

It's not gun control.It's personal defence elemanation. They only want to control ours.

    The Mini-14 does not use any type of blow-back action. It uses a rather typical gas piston attached to an actuator which then operates a Garand type rotating bolt which locks using lugs on the bolt mating into the receiver wall. Delayed blowback (also called retarded or hestitation blowback) type actions contain no positive breech locking mechanism...which the Mini-14 clearly has.

    Mark's observations are correct. But, to elaborate, the Mini's gas system is an odd one when considered in comparison to earlier systems. It involves a portion of the combustion gasses being tapped of through a small port in the bottom of the barrel and vented backward along the bottom of the barrel through the so-called piston. The "piston", however, does not move as in the M1 Garand in which the tip of the operating rod is a moving piston inside the gas cylinder, or like the short stroke piston of the M1 Carbine, which only moves a very short distance before striking the inside surface of the operating rod and causing it to move rearward. In fact, the "piston" of the Mini doesn't move at all, it simply applies gas pressure to the slide assembly (operating rod by a different name) and causes it to move rearward. So, in my opinion, the Mini's gas system most closely resembles the "direct gas impingement" system. It is locked at the time of firing, but is unlocked by direct gas action.

    Is it possable that the bullet is still in the barrel when the opporating rod is moving or all the way back thus affecting accuarcy?

    The port is a ways down the barrel. The hardware it has to actuate weighs more than your projectile. That projectile has long forgotten about its intimate relationship with the brass and the bolt...it is well on its way.

    The 'blow-back' action like a generic auto pistol, I shoot just as well as my revolvers. So I guess I would not know of an accuracy problem anyway.

    Most semi-auto pistols, above .380 caliber, are not blow-back, but recoil (Browning system) design. Although, there are other recoil systems (locked breach), such as the Luger, etc.

    Studying these various operating systems is fascinating, and leads to some extremely interesting history.
