Marlin Model 1893

Next up is mt Late grandfathers Model 1893 Marlin chambered in .32 Winchester Special. Ser # 395549. This Rifle has a few nicks and dings, and the what I am guessing to be Case hardened metal on the reciever I don't know if it is supposed to look like it does. The barrel steel is black and this looks like it is Blotchy. Either way was looking for some imfo on this model since I was thinking about having it reblued since most of the barrel and shell tube are worn off. I also belive it has a head spacing problem. And the rifling is decent with no pitting I can see.

Any significance to the "Special Smokeless Steel" stamped on the left side of the barrel underneath the leaf sight.

    Right now it's between $350.00 and $700.00 depending on whether it's a rifle or Carbine, takedown, round or octagon barrel, etc. That's not out of any book, that's what the auctions have been bringing. Reblue it and cut the value in half or less depending on the quality of the buff job when they prep it. There is the option of restoration. A restorer is not a rebluer, He will completly restore the gun to as close to factory new condition as possible. Unfortunatly restoration won't add much if any to the guns value. And it's very very expensive.

    Do have a gunsmith check the headspace. Most lever actions of that vintage are fairly loose in the chamber dimensions. The headspace is measured on the rim not the shoulder like a rimless cartridge. I've owned several 1893's and couple of them let the spent primer protrude from the fired case a couple thousands of an inch. For me it hasn't been a problem. Do have it checked by a qualified gunsmith before firing it.

    MIne exrurudes the primer from the case as well.

    Round barrel Rifle....Not a take down.

    Bluing is fairly presentable, but was just thinking of having it redone.
