How to tell, mountain-v-KS mountain????

I went to the local shop and one of the guys shows me a Remington 700 BDL in .280 cal. I'm pretty sure this was a mountain rifle i.e.- shorter contoured barrel, light weight, but had a composite stock that was not quite black but dark with slight brown tones(not your regular plastic looking remington stock). It had open sights and the finish was a flat black - even the bolt, the handle was plum/blue. The rifle was in very nice condition with a Bausch/Lomb 3x9 on it. I only saw the "Remington 700" on the side, with no other designation.
Can some of you guys tell me if there is a designation on these as to style? I've had a mountain/with wood before, and it had nothing marked other than Remington 700. Do you have to go by serial #????
If it is a KS - I'm getting a really good deal. If not - I'm paying just under Bluebook... Thanks!!!
Also - are the mountain style receivers the same configuration as the regular 700s???

    like you, all the custom shop guns I have seen only have caliber designation and date of manufacture code on the barrel, near the reciever and no other markings on the barrel...the oddball synthetics like the AS, FS, and RS all have some "hoopla" written on the barrels...doesnt mean much, but here are some observations I have made...black, grey or camo patterns on most of the custom shop stocks...no floorplates or sight on most of the mountain rifle variations ( with that said, custom shop should mean custom and you should be able to get it anyway you want it )..doesnt mean anything, but have never seen the brownish tint in a remington stock..

    The KS stands for the arimid fiber stock (Kevlar Stock).

    All the current Mountain rifles either offer the Bdl type floor plate or the detachable magazine.

    guess i should clarify my floorplate statement...havent seen a floorplate on any of the custom shop mountain rifles or the stainless version mountain rifles offered with synthetic stocks from the early 90's...

    Can call them with the s/n and they'll confirm if it is.
    Customs could come in different variations and color stocks. Have owned green, gray-black, and brown.
    Barrels didn't have the complete 'address' roll marked, and the size is different. That's an easy way to tell.
