Which SKS Not To Buy?
The gun bug has bit me again and I am out to finally get a SKS. I thought I would asked the experts which SKS I should avoid if any.
Looking for a good shooter that will be reliable, fairly accurate and can more easily accept the hi-caps. Looking to spend less than $200 on one of these. Let me have it, your opinions count. Thanks.

Ive heard the albanians are pretty crappy. Bad craftsmenship and horrible accuracy. But thats only what ive heard.

I have a 12yr old Chinise with a advance tech stock -match grade trigger group and a 9x40 A/O Simmionspro hunter scope, I have taken many hog and deer with this rifle,it is well made and has held up for thousand of rounds being fired through it and a newer Chinese,for the P/U and ranching No complaint with either gun they are cheap reliable,and accurate,but I have a friend that has the Russian model he likes it better than his Chinese..

As for the chinese SKS rifles they are hit or miss some are well made
and some are down right dangerious to shoot when checking one out
Take the reciever cover off and check the receiver walls for tool marks if the walls show slight tooling with a smooth finish chances are very good the steel was Good and hard , Heavy tool marks on the receiver walls are a dead give away they used soft metal Then check the bore (a Bore scope is ideal) for the condition of the chrome lining it should be smooth and uniform through the whole barrel If its
flaking off missing or thin is some parts of the bore It could be a death trap waiting to happen, If picked right a chinese SKS is not too bad, I own several and shoot them often.
Now theres the YUGO sks rifles that are Very well made and you can own 2 for the price of one Nice chinese version BUT they lack chrome lined bores and some say the models with the "Grenade launcher"
on the muzzle are not too accurate.
I did not care at all for the quality of the albanian version.
THE BEST SKS? The Russian Models! if you can get one a good price
they are Beautifuly Made and Very accurate for this type of rifle,Truely My top choice[:D]0 -
I have a yugo. I love it ! Its made with milled parts, not stamped like chinese. As for the hi cap mag, its a negative. Wont accept them without work. They are great rifles and Im sure you will enjoy yours when you finally get it.

I personally would go with a Russian make.Next in line would be a Chinese.Russian gun carried by Russian troops when they were designed and made in Russia by a Russian.Get a Russian.They have one on Gunbroker Circa 1959 made in Russia for around $150.00 I beleive. 0 -
Of course, putting a detatchable hi-cap mag in an SKS that currently is equipped with a box mag is a felony, but I'd look hard for a decent Russian made in my birth year, if it was me. For about $250, with some patience, you should be able to find a Chicom SKS Sporter that takes AK mags. A bit more and find a SKS-D.

My Norinco functions perfectly since I replaced the
modified AK 30rd mag w/a 20rd duckbill.Lot's of fun
and accurate enough for me.

I've owned several, from different sources and ALL have been great rifles! The best shooter was a Chinese that had a superb trigger pull. I own a Russian which seems to be better made than the others, but it does not shoot one bit better than any other. I strongly recommend that you use it in as-is, issue conformation. Why in H do you need more than 10 rd cap?

As for Maximat, none of these are tack drivers, but they are a simple and durable weapon, cheap and fun.
I have two old chinese that have never failed to function,and when you take a newbie guest to the range, they love to shoot them, or a MAK-90 (sometimes 'till you detect a faint smell of woodsmoke...pick it up carefully). The metalwork/fit/finish is OK for this type gun. No major problems with duckbills. My son has a Yugo that seems a little 'heavier', and even though the barrel is not chromed, with non-corrosive ammo it should not be a major problem. He wants to cut into the top of the slotted portions of the g'nade launcher to reduce muzzle climb....I don't know about that...it shoots fine. And like most of that type, even when filthy dirty they still work.
After all this, and others verbage, you have probably decided that it is not worth the money going through all the posts. Just find one you like, clean it up, grab some cheap ammo, and have fun.0 -
I have a Chinese SKS that I bought 12 years ago, fitted with ATI stock, and it's awesome. It's very accurate, and it's never jammed once.
The trick with Chinese is making sure the action is nice and snug, and that the inside of the receiver is not damaged. Chinese steel processes were varied, to say the least, when these guns were made. They were produced in several different parts of the country, and therefore have varied results.
If you don't want to mess around, spend the money and buy Russian. They are guaranteed winners every time, but you pay 3 times as much...0 -
Which SKS not to buy? Any one that costs more than $175. Used to be able to get Russian SKS's with ammo from Samco global arms for $79. I bought my Chinese "paratrooper" for $125, seven years ago. Did it go up in value? Heck no but it shoots great, no way I would pay $200 or $250 for a Russian.
Most SKS's that I've seen require a 500rd to 1000rd break in. Those parts need to work together a little.
