I put an M1 converted to an M1A for $500. on layaway at an local gunshop. The metal work looks great and the barrel is an NM along with the sight. comes with an 20 rds mag. But the only thing is that it need to be rebedded. Is this an good deal. Never mess with an M1 or M1A or M14 before. Any help is welcome. I have already been told that no M1 was converted by the military and my father comfirmed this. Thanks.

    Thinking about getting an M1 and would like to know if there is anything I need to Know about before I buy one. Brand etc. I cant afford it but I just have to get one. I was at a gun show today talking to a dealer and I was subconciously caressing the stock as we spoke. He also had m14s for 500.

    We would need to know if you are talking about a Garand or a carbine.

    Either way, there is a lot of stuff to know. Just depends on what's important to you. Collecting, shooting, or something else...

    For $500, you ought to grab one of the M14's(?). That's real cheap.

    Most likely the rifle you described is a Chicom M14 clone. An M1 is a completely different rifle.

    The best place to buy an M1 if you are new to them is the Civilian Marksmanship Program (www.odcmp.com). A service grade rifle is $500 plus shipping.

    Nmyers, you have to be affiliated with a club and be a markesman to own one of these. Im just a regular guy who shoots on his own turf. They dont even have that type of thing here in southern Illinois. Any suggestions? Good prices. The ones at the gun show were between $600-$2400.00

    I think that the M14S is the Polytech version of the M1A. I have one of these as well as a service grade Springfield M1A. It actually is a little more accurate than my Springfield. However, it is not made as well as the Springfield. $500 is a good price if it is in good shape.

    Gun Runner, it's not necessarily difficult to qualify for a CMP rifle; read the requirements on their website. Some of the gun clubs on their list require only that you mail a check with an application. You don't have to be a "marksman", just take a 1 day gun clinic which is offered by many gun clubs. Or, you can substitute military service, age, disability, etc.

    Today, you can often find an M1 with CMP paperwork on the used market at close to what you would pay CMP for one. They have flooded the market over the last few years, & a lot of accumulators are selling their excess at whatever the market will bring, often $500-600. You shouldn't have any problem finding one.

    The reason I stress CMP paperwork is because with these, you know what you are getting. There are just too many things to look out for when buying any M1 rifle for us to tell you all the things that you need to know. Never EVER buy an M1 with "CAI" markings; avoid any with import markings. Beyond those warnings, it just takes experience.

    I placed my first order for one from the CMP a few days ago. Before I mailed my order, I called them to make sure I had everything they required. I was told the wait after they receive my order is only about 30 days. Seems this is a slow time of the year for people sending in orders.

    Hey guys I want to thank you for your advice on the M1. I will most likely go with one of the cmp models. Im not redy to purchase yet. (still working on getting a 1911) After that an M1 is definetly my next purchase.
