Scope Choice?
Now that I have my new Browning A-bolt Medallion .300 Winny I want to put a new scope on it. I am looking at a varible style probably 400.00 to 500.00 dollars. I was looking at Leupolds VXIII 2.5-8 x 36mm. Has anyone used this scope? or Has anyone heard anything on this lower powered varible? I'm also considering the Nikon Monarch and the Ziess Conquest both in the 3-9 x 40mm. Most of my hunting is done in Eastern OR timber and shots beyond 200 yards would rare. Browning has got some scopes coming out this year you look at those. They are supposed to be pretty nice optics. I don't know much about them if I can find more I'll post it.

At those ranges, I would use a Leupold 1-4, or 1 1/2 - 5. Keep the weight down. After you pack it all day, you'll appreciate it.

Sounds like we were in the same boat.Lefty ,Browning ,scope searching ,only diff is I have a 7mm.Put your seat belt on cause your in for a ride .I guess what it boils down to is $$ and what you like.I looked at a whole mess of everything and sifted through the posts on different boards.Best thing is to get to a place to look at a good variety of scopes.Or if you know a few people with something mounted on a rifle that you like.After your favorite brand , then comes the power choice,then comes your reticle options ,which are endless.Last but not least ,what kind of mount system will work best for your use.Oh and dont forget to pick the finish scheme to match your rifle also.WOW! I am no authority on this subject cause I just started my adventure around X Mass time,for my scope.Not to persuade you in any way ,I am going with the Zeiss Conquest 4.5x14x44 W/the Z plex ret.Just because that is what I wanted.You will find everyone on this board to be very helpfull , for whatever you need .Good luck.Dont forget ,its only money and we are only passin through. Scottyboy, I keep hearing people say I'd better prepare for the recoil of this .300 Win Mag. I also have a .308 Norma Magnum and I can't see this being any worse. Anyway do you guys think this is something that should effect my scope decision? I believe the Leupold, Nikon and Zeiss all should stand up ok. Have you heard of anyone having problems with any of these holding zero? Leupold advertises that thier scopes continually stand up the "Force of .375 H&H Mag". By the way I went and checked out the Zeiss today and they looked great optically, the only thing I didn't care for is the blue Zeiss insignia which I could get over considering the Conquest is less then 390.00 bucks.

I would go the Zeiss. They are made from Zeiss Germany parts but assembled in the USA. You are getting very close to German Quality but at less than 60% of the cost. The monarch series (had a few and they work very good)is nice but I would shy away from it with a high recoil gun.
The 3-9x40 Zeiss would be a very good scope. I would check out the different reticule options and see which one you like best. The best place I have found to buy the Zeiss Conquest from is HuntElk4@cs.com and he is excellent to deal with. Check prices with him and shop around if you think you can do better (I doubt you will). His name is Mark. Good Luck with your hunting.

Several burris Signatures and Black diamonds are survivng the 300win very well here. I have nothing against the leupy's,..but the burris scopes are priced better.
Short of that,..take a good hard look at the IOR Valdada scopes in the magnification range you are considering. www.valdada.com

I have three different 300 mag 1 Weatherby 1 Winny and
1H&H The Weatherby and winny has a Leupold Varx-2 3x9
the H&H has a Burris 2x8.I also have Leupold on my 375.
I have not had a lick of trouble with any of them.The 375
has about 2500 rounds thru it and the winny the same.
I prefer the Winny recoil instead of the Weatherby so I
shoot it alot more. Dave0 -
I have owned several Leupold vari x -III scopes over the years and have hunted hard with them, But have recently bought a new Burris Fullfield II 3-9X40 Balistic plex scope For less than half the price
of my Vari X III scopes, I Love this scope it is in my opinion
clearer than the leupold and the balistic plex reticle really works,
as soon as i bought it i ran it under the sink got it good and wet
then froze it in my freezer for 48 hours then let it thaw on my kitchen table, It will not fog or leak so far.Worth looking at

I have a leupold vari XIII 1.5-5 on a Remington classic 350Rem Mag. Most of my hunting is in woods with few long shots. I keep the scope on 2 for any quick shots I may need for the large FOV. The compact size of the scope makes my rifles balance feel great. 0 -
While you're shopping, check out the Pentax LightSeekers!!! I compared a LightSeeker 3x9, a Leupold Vari-X II and a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 the other evening, turned all the scopes to "9" and looked at the same deer at 220 yards away. The differences in the scopes was in the rticles also! The Leupold had the "fine duplex", great for paper or varmints but disappeared on the deer!!! The Leupold was also the "least light gathering" of the 3!!!! The Nikon with it's "Nikoplex reticle" was sharp and clear and would have been no problem taking the intended target. The Pentax undoubtedly added 20 minutes of daylight to the scene!!!! It was astounding the difference in the veiwing of the same target with the 3 different scopes! Early AM, Late PM, if something out there is brighter I gotta see it!!! As a side note, the leupold is now sold! There should be a new NIKON delivered tomorrow.....6.5-20 for a varmint rifle, but if I had to choose tonite for a "woods gun" it would be a PENTAX!!!! GHD 0 -

I agree with deerhntr. For the price I don't think you can beet the Burris. I use the this scope on my 7mm mag. Great scope. A couple of my hunting friends are sold on the Leupold's. They have hunted hard with them and they definately stand up to the recoil. Not to mention the snow, drops, and falls.
I just bought a 300 RUM and am planning on getting either the Leupold VariX-II or the Burris Fullfield II. I have also heard good things about the Nikon Buckmaster, but don't know anyone who has hunted with one.0 -

Great optics and coatings, durable construction. Consider a scope with posi-loc.

I agree with groundhog I love the pentax series of scopes. In addition to being brigther than the leupold series they are about 100 dollars cheaper and they have a better warranty, awesome combination if you ask me. 0 -
I have always been a diehard Leupold fan! Cant beat their dependability and warranty. But their recent pricing has driven me to buy Nikons. In the past two years and 4 scopes later I enjoy the same clarity as the Leupold, never had a Nikon or Leupold fog taking them from the nice warm cabin out into below freezing conditions in Maine. I dont know who is making scopes for Springfield Armory but the one I purchased for my AR 50 is crystal clear and is the only one that has stood up to the recoil of the 50 BMG. All that said I believe you would be well served purchasing a Nikon. P.S. Midway currently has a good sale on Leupold products you might check out! Good luck... 0 -
Hey, He Dog What is a posi-loc? Is that the mount style? I have heard a lot of people talking about Burris. Where are they located? I've been leaning towards Leupold just because they are located here in town so if there wasa problem I could drive it to them. Has anyone had any warranty experience with anything other then Leupold? (Burris, Zeiss, Nikon) Thanks.

posi lock is a crosshair locking system they give you a little key with the scope to lock it in after you have made all your adjustments.
Seriously look into the Pentax Lightseeker series.0
