I don't have an answer to your actual question as I don't have a S&W K frame readily available to inspect, however, I just wanted to comment on your title "dumb question". I wanted to say that there are no dumb questions only dumb answers.[:D][:p][8]

P.S. I believe the "K" frames came in both square and round butts but yours sounds like a square to me.

The square butt has a prominent corner both front and back of the grip, a round butt has a nice smooth radius on the back, not a corner, and is designed not to get snagged on clothing.

My border collie is smarter than your honor student.

No ... you don't go by the grip because there are some grips out there that do in fact make a round butt appear square.

With the grips off look at the frame. If the rear curves down and around toward a sharp corner at the front ... you've got a round butt frame.

If your still uncertain email me and I'll send you a pix.

Eagle Grips has a photo on their site showing round vs. square butt. Maybe it will help? http://www.eaglegrips.com/images/b5.JPG
